One of the hottest kitchen trends today is also an incredibly timeless one: Pairing two different paint colors for lower and upper kitchen cabinets. The dynamic approach to paint color moves homeowners away from classic white-painted kitchen cabinets, encouraging them to breathe bolder, move vibrant color into the busiest—and most popular—room in the home.

Given its popularity, a two-toned color scheme was already top-of-mind when Paper Moon Painting, expert cabinet refinishers and painters, was asked to modernize an Austin home's kitchen space. A Kitchen Cabinet Makeover

Paper Moon's Austin team expertly assessed the kitchen makeover and took a long look at the client's goals. Knowing that the client directive was to satisfy "both the heart and the eye," Paper Moon suggested the dimensional beauty provided by a two-toned approach. The client was instantly smitten.

"The homeowner was tired of her dated, stained cabinets but didn't want to replace them entirely," says Lisa Moon. As experts in giving existing kitchen cabinets a brand new life with professional refinishing and painting services, Paper Moon was the right contractor for the job. Using their prepping, painting and color skills, the team set to work giving this kitchen an overhaul without having to replace anything.

Painting cabinets to look like they are newly installed straight from the factory requires a special problem-solving paint. The team chose Benjamin Moore^® ADVANCE^® Interior paint for its incredible leveling and easy-to-use waterborne-alkyd formula—and because ADVANCE^® is available in all of Benjamin Moore's 3,500 colors+, in a range of paint finishes.

The client had installed a stylish gray and white cement backsplash, but the update was overshadowed by the '90s cabinets. Paper Moon used the backsplash as color inspiration when planning the project.

For the upper cabinets, Paper Moon selected Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray HC-170, from the brand's popular Historical Collection. The popular warm gray blended perfectly with the soft gray tones of the backsplash.

On the lower cabinets, Paper Moon recommended adding a pop of color and personality with Hale Navy HC-154, also from the Historical Collection. "We chose Hale Navy to ground the kitchen in a rich sophisticated color," says Moon. "Since the kitchen is visible to the living and dining areas of the home, it was important to select colors that are timeless and elegant, also keeping with the unique, colorful vibe that Austin homes are known for."

The combination of striking Benjamin Moore paint color, and a homeowner who isn't afraid of color, made this project another great success.
